DLNA - Movies - Entertainment

You might have heard about DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance®) supported or ready devices.i have seen this on a lot of devices, but never really bothered to understand what it actually is. Until recently !!

I used to own a mobile called Samsung Jet. A great mobile then, had to go through a lot of trouble to own it too and faintly remember that its supported DLNA. Similarly the bluray players,TVs etc.

What was such a mystery was how to use it ? and if we are using it, do i have to switch on my computer to be able to view movies on my TV screen ? Such a headache !! reallly...

After a tiring day,if you want to catch a movie, you have to manipulate a whole bunch of devices to make sure get the right movie and comfort.. else we end up watching movies already watched or those boring movies repeated on television.

For entertainment buffs with little time available for movies, this setup really works.

What really changed was the introduction of NAS into to Home networks. We can just setup a storage device in your network and stream those contents into your DLNA supported TV or devices. Which includes Phone,Tablet, laptop or a desktop.

See the brilliance of the setup -- Watching movie from almost every corner of your home !!
Be it on couch to kitchen !!! Bedroom to bathroom !! Across every form factor Plam size to lap sizes devices.

You can even setup slideshow of images taken during the day or a party or a outing and play it on your HD TV without much hopla, while remembering the moments with your near and dear. Such a pleasant experience !!

Well though the concept of connected home is broughtup in CES-2014 where devices can talk to each other, making home SMART. But this is not new when it comes to entertainment or media streaming.

Setup is very simple.. All you have to have is a TV or Bluray Player or home theatre with DLNA, Wifi network, Connected Harddisk or NAS. Once all these are connected to a single network. All DLNA devices will recognize themselves automatically, thus the contents of the hard disk or storage devices can be streamed to your tvs. Which with latest smart phones and tablets, the same can be done to your mobile using App available on play store and app store.

Main hindrance to this kind of setup is the kind of format played by the devices. New tvs, android smart phones, tablets can play varied video formats, but iOS devices are restricted. Old tvs can have a additional media streamer device and these devices support varied video formats, thus adding to the overall experience and their place i home entertainment, even with emergence of smart tvs or internet connected tvs.

The setup i experienced was a D-Link Router with USB storage addition option, WD Mybook Live(NAS-Cloud) and LG 3d Smart TV.(LG supports maximum video formats compared to Samsung or Sony, But panasonic has that kind of support too). It was amazing that i can see all my Pics shot with DSLR in HD crisp clarity and movies i used to watch on my laptop are now streamed direct to the TV.

The whole experience fall into place when i visited my Brother, who is a doctor and has this kind of setup, but minus the services it can offer. His insight into the whole home entertainment was amazing and was achievable with the kind of setup he has. All i had to to do was connect all the devices together to form a connected and smart home !!

Amazing Experience !!

Peace !!
